This proposal was made for the JEM Design Contest of Ibanez Guitars (HOSHINO GAKKY CO LID), in honor of the signature guitar of the great guitarist Steve Vai. The design was developed from the formal values of the Caligo Memnon, a butterfly, known for its wing markings that generate the image of an owl’s head. This characteristic of the species causes predators to flee when they see it.
The decision to work with this lepidopteran was due to the fact that Steve Vai has been a musician who has managed to project himself above the capabilities of his competitors, surpassing them by far, and that both his technique on the guitar and his staging are overwhelming, as is the case with the Caligo Memnon.
After doing a research on the butterfly and studying its shape and color, a first approach was carried out with colored pencils, to then reach the development of the illustration by means of brushes and digital filters.
