Ibanez Jem – CM777
This proposal was created for the JEM Design Contest by Ibanez Guitars (Hoshino Gakki Co. Ltd.), in tribute to the legendary guitarist Steve Vai and his iconic signature instrument. The design draws inspiration from the Caligo Memnon butterfly, whose striking wing patterns resemble the eyes of an owl, a natural defense that causes predators to retreat. This metaphor beautifully reflects Vai’s artistry—an overwhelming presence on stage and a technique that consistently surpasses expectations.
After in-depth research into the butterfly’s form and coloration, I began with exploratory sketches in colored pencil before transitioning into a refined digital illustration using brushes and layered filters. The result is a design that merges natural symbolism with musical virtuosity, embodying both the elegance of the Caligo Memnon and the commanding performance style of Steve Vai.
